Gilt Copper Clock with an Automaton Writing Chinese Characters with a Brush. Built by Timothy Williamson, London, 1780. Clock plays musical chimes at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock. The automaton in European clothing writes eight Chinese characters with a Chinese ink brush, namely

八方向化    九土

Two automata on the highest tier spread out a scroll, with the auspicious Chinese characters “萬壽無疆”.
